Chelsea kept up their unbeaten run in the league against Spurs as Hasselbaink's first half goal was enough for them to take all 3 points back across to West London.
Spurs started brightly enough. Defoe, fresh from an impressive England debut in midweek, saw his curling effort saved by Ambrosio with just 2 minutes on the clock. Taricco blazed over and Keane's cross went over Brown at the far post.
Lampard fired wide from distance as the Blues started to come back into the game. Doherty's headed clearance stopped Hasselbaink going for goal and then Keane had to clear off the line from the Chelsea striker's header.
The game swung back towards Spurs as Brown fed Defoe but his shot was saved. Keane played a killer ball through to Carr but the right back failed to control it and it went for a goal kick. King then headed well wide when in plenty of space.
The goal came 8 minutes before the break. Duff's cross converted by JFH to give the Blues the lead.
Keane burst into the box but was not able to beat Ambrosio from a tight angle. Crosses from Carr and Ziege then just eluded Keane and Defoe respectively.
Kanoute was introduced for Ziege at half time with Keane switching to the left side of midfield.
7 minutes into the half Spurs were denied what looked like a clear penalty as Brown goalbound shot was deflected down by Terry's arm but referee Steve Bennett was having none of it. Taricco picked up a booking for tripping the goalscorer as he closed in on goal - it could have been red but for the fact Gardner was covering.
Keller had to save well from Lampard and Gudjohnsen as Chelsea tried to catch us on the break. Defoe saw a dipping curling shot tipped over by Ambrosio before Hasselbaink fired wide.
Ambrosio had to save Gardner's header before Keane's acrobatic injury-time volley flew over.
The defeat means we are still 3 points of the magic 40 and we really need to get something out of our games over the Easter weekend, Everton away and Man City at home. Defensively we looked pretty solid today with Anthony Gardner in fine form and the Ginger Pele even playing some balls out of defence. Stephen Kelly looked more assured in his 30 minutes substitute appearance than last time I saw him play, even though he was playing out of position.
But going forward we seem to be having all kinds of problems. No Spurs player has scored in the last 5 games. The only goal for coming from Newcastle's Andy O'Brien. Quite a change from the 15 goals in 4 games prior to this barren spell. For some reason today in the first half we were putting in a lot of high balls which John Terry and William Gallas had very few problems dealing with as Keane and Defoe lack the height and presence to compete with top quality centrebacks in that area.
Then when we did have Kanoute on the pitch the supply seemed to dry up and the forwards seemed to be making the same runs and going for the same balls.
The midfield seemed to be afraid of the Chelsea players' reputations at time allowing too many 50-50 balls to be won by the Blues. Today we had 3 central midfielders and a left wing back playing across the middle. The lack of a proper right sided midfielder allowed Duff too much space. In contrast we looked strong down the left as Ziege, Taricco and Keane worked well together.
MOTM: Gardner - Another composed performance from the newly-capped centreback. Kept Gudjohnsen under wraps for the majority of the game and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with a late header
