Humble-ish beginnings

This is our new fishtank.

It contains no fish. Yet.

Thought we could just stroll along to a garden centre on a wet Bank Holiday Monday, buy a goldfish or two and whack them in a bowl. But life's never that simple.

Had to buy a tank with a heater, light, filter and pump, 3 different additives, a syphon, a magnetic scum cleaning thingy and a bag of gravel.

Couldn't buy any fish cos you have to wait for the filter to get full of bacteria. Going to get the water tested on Sunday. Then maybe, just maybe, we can get a couple of fish to get us going.

There's life Jim, but not as we know it

Or expected it.

There are several random snail-like creatures in our fishtank. Think they are slowly munching away at the plants.

Not sure if they should be there or not or whether they are doing any harm.

Got to take a water sample to the garden centre on Sunday. Hopefully we can then buy some fish. Want to get a few different types if possible - as long as they don't eat each other.

Decided at least one of my fish will be of a decent size and called Albert.

Fine name for a fish if you ask me.

Finally have time to blog

Work this week was every bit as busy as I'd expected and then some.

Managed to get acceptable results for the month so most of the management types were kept happy but got lots of meetings next week to go through why the numbers weren't as good as predicted. Will be mucho fun, no doubt.

Got to get a train down to Hastings on Wednesday for a day of meetings. 3 hours each way and have to leave Aldershot about 20 past 7 to get there for 11. I'm not supposed to be awake at that time in the morning , let alone on a train.

The wedding was good on Saturday. Weather was just about right. Spent ages waiting for the photographer to take photos of just about every combination of guests possible.

Food was good then spent the rest of the evening on the beers.

Drive back on Sunday was pretty good. Managed to avoid heavy traffic which is quite an achievement on a Bank Holiday weekend.

Spent Monday buying a fishtank and then studying before going back to the grindstone on Tuesday.

Went to the Hogshead again last night with Achtung to watch the Geordies lose. No violence this time but they ran out of nitrogen halfway through the evening so could only sell bottled beer.

Football tomorrow. Last home game of a wretched season. Will probably be going for quite a few beers afterwards as it's the last time I'll see some of my footie mates until next season.

Visit to the garden centre on Sunday and then got to catch up on some studying as it's taken a backseat this week

Spot the difference

Went to the garden centre again and got the green light to get some fish.

Bought 3 clown loach and 2 black and one silver molly. Also bought a bridge to keep the missus happy. There were some random yellow fish that she wanted but the bloke at the garden centre told us they were psychos from an African lake and wouldn't get on with the other fish so decided against them.

The silver molly is a male and has been named Albert as promised.

"Albert"

Have to wait 2 weeks before we can add any more fish, and then we have to get another sample tested to see if the water is still ok.

Just read that the clown loaches should eat any snails in the tank so hopefully that should solve that problem.

Spurs 1 - 0 Blackburn

Spurs managed a win in their last home game of this season which gives them the chance of a semi-respectable league placing if they pick up another 3 points at relegated Wolves next week.

The only goal of the game came after 18 minutes as Ledley King, back in the heart of defence where he belongs, play a superb through ball to Defoe, who brought it under control and then lashed it past Enckelman.

There were plenty of chances for both teams to score further goals. Most of the chances for Blackburn were either long range efforts or gifted to them by errors by the Spurs defence. Gardner in particular had a 15 minute spell, when after making one mistake, his fragile confidence went to pot and he couldn't do a thing right. Cole robbed him and Stead fired wide. A minute later same thing happened - this time Keller saved well low down. With an hour gone a lack of communication saw Cole hold off Gardner and try an overhead kick with Keller stranded but it went wide.

For the other 75 minutes Gardner had a good game but he needs to cut out these spells as they will prove costly against better teams.

Keller's uncertainty doesn't help the defenders either. After 20 minutes Stead broke the offside trap. Kasey's poor starting position and failure to react quickly meant he had to block the shot with his chest outside the box. Brown bravely charged down the follow-up as Keller was sprawled out on the floor.

Enckelmann saved well from Keane just before the break and Defoe failed to get anything on Ziege's superb early cross in the second half.

Keane hit the crossbar with 20 minutes to go after Defoe had got to the byline and put in a good cross. 5 minutes later Ziege's volley from a Keane corner hit Gray on the line.

The movement and effort was much improved throughout. Ricketts played well on his return to the team and his workrate was excellent.

The lack of height in the starting XI made it difficult at times and we need to adapt our style of play if it is Keane and Defoe up front.

If Spurs had played like this every week, we would not have been looking over our shoulders qite so much recently.

MOTM: Defoe - Took his goal superbly and was a thorn in Blackburn's side all day. May just get a place in the Euro 2004 squad if Vassell's injury keeps him out. Deserves it on recent form.

The Famous Five

Or should that be the fortunate five?

Confused? Read on..

Glanced at the tank last night and noticed one of the clown loaches was chasing something. Looked a bit closer and realised it was a little babby fish!

At first it went and hid around the back of the pump but eventually it reappeared so I could show the missus.

Over the next hour or so a few more appeared at random. Not sure whether it was Patty or Selma (as we've named the female mollies) who gave birth as the fry just kept appearing and lurking in the gravel or resting on leaves.

Eventually had to start separating them as Albert was getting a taste for them. I know he scoffed at least one and there were a few others unaccounted for besides those we resuced.

Managed to scoop five out and put them in a sieve resting in the water. Will get a proper net at the weekend. Hopefully they will survive until then.

Apparently the mollies give birth about once a month. Don't really want too many more mollies so in future we might leave the fry to fend for themselves. Bit of Darwinism in action.

End of the road

The football season is over. 13 weeks till the next one starts. Thankfully we have Euro 2004 and no doubt endless speculation about who the next Spurs manager will be and a list as long as your arm of players Spurs are supposedly signing - but generally don't.

Went to the Wolves game yesterday. Had to get up at stupid o'clock to get a train over to Guildford where Charlie was picking me up for the drive to Loughborough. Got there at 10 and gave Dave a wake-up call. Typical student.

Met a couple of Dave's mates who were coming with us and drove over to Walsall where we had planned to drop Dave's car but eventually ended up driving all the way and parking in the city centre.

Got plenty of looks from Wolves fans as we walked around town. Went for a beer while we waited for some of Charlie's mates. Was stood at the bar when suddenly I get a tap on the shoulder. My mate Mark from Carlisle had ended up in the same pub purely by chance - mainly cos there were no bouncers keeping Spurs fan out.

Game was good. A lot of bother afterwards as the Old Bill struggled to keep the 2 sets of fans apart. Wasn't handled particularly well by the Old Bill. Once it had calmed down a bit, we managed to persuade them we didn't want to go to the station where they were forcing everyone esle and get back to the city centre, avoiding any trouble.

Got back to Loughborough and went out to celebrate. Got suitably drunk but it didn't turn messy.

4 hours sleep and then up too early again as Charlie had to get back for work. Problem free drive but then had to get a replacement bus service back to Aldershot which took twice as long as usual.

Going to watch Aldershot in the Conference play-off final now then maybe study or sleep.

Come on the Shots!
